In h ab its the Coasts o f the Pacific Ocean,
I have placed this and the following species with the Lotti® n ot without some hesitation, as I have never
seen the animals. M a r tin i, vol. l . f . 34. appears to be a representation o f a very old specimen of this shell,
b ut he speaks o f it as identical with A danson’s Gadin, which it does not resemble.
L o t t ia ? c o s t a t a , t. 3 9 . / . 2 .

Inhabits the coasts o f the Pacific Ocean ?
This may possibly be only a deeply ribbed variety o f the following.
L o t t i a v a r i a b i l i s , t. 3 9 . / . 3 , 4 , 5 .
Shell obtusely oval, with its apex more or less elevated, being sometimes very low and flat and sometimes
much raised and conical ; apex never central, generally about one tliird ne a te r to the anterior than to

concentrically arranged ; the internal surface is also extremely variable, being sometimes o f a nearly uniform
bright green, sometimes nearly colourless, frequently white or green and more o t less varied with brown of
various degrees o f intensity ; its center is alsd often very elegantly mottled a nd speckled and varied with lines
and spots of a very dark brown colour ; the muscular impression is usually while, though n ot unfrequently
motUed with brown I the margin is moreover greatly varied in its form and colouring, being occasionally
dentated and smnated an d frequently nearly even,- sometimes white, pale brown or green with black spots
and sometimes nearly or quite colourless. ’
Inhabits the coast o f Chili.
This is one o t the m ost variable species o f P atelliform shells, both in its form and colouring. Figs, 4 & 5
represent the most usual extremes in both respects. F ig . 3 represents a u accidental monstrosity.
