Murex Magellanicus. Lam.
In the young state this shell is only cancel’ately ribbed, being entirely destitute o f the concentric elevated
pla te s ; in tins state it might be mistaken for another species. From this shell having become very common,

T his shell has been referred to the genus Monoceros, because it has a tooth on the front of the o ute r lip ;
b u t i f this is to be regarded as the only character o f the genus, several Múrices as Murex tenuispina, Murex
acanthopterus, Murex inflatus, and many other species o f shells, such as Turbine lla angulifera, P y ru la
plúmbea, S tru th io la r ia monoceros, &c., must be referred to it. Lamarck never intended that this should be
the case, for he expressly speaks o f the flatness o f the pillar and the shortness o f the canal.
CONUS.
Tentacles short, placed on the lower side of the base o f a sh o rt large cylindrical cavity, in the base of
which the real trunk is placed. The eyes near the top of the tentacles. T ru n k conical, acute. Foot truncated
in front, grooved all round its edge, m aking it double edged. Operculum linear, hrony, thick, annular.
The trunk appears to vary in length. Conus geographieus, and the wide mouthed Cones, have no oper-
cula ; C. te x iilis , C. stria tu s, C. H ebraus, &c. &c. have distinct ones.
The animal of these shells absorbs the outer layers o f the inner w horls, leaving only the inne r o f th e three
to separate one twirl o f the body from the other, thus lightening the weight o f the shell without destroying
in the least degree its strength, as the oute r whorl is o f the usual thickness, and a t the same time furnishing
Itself with lime for increasing the size of its shell.

Rarely the lines are alternately narrower, and sometimes the m arbling is pale or wanting. This is one of
the most beautiful of the genus.
