MOLLUSCOUS A N IM A L S . 141
Shell bluish, an d the nodules white in some specimens.
I t is probable tha t Trochus m elanostomus, Gmel. from Chem. v. t . 161. / . 1526, 1527, will form a new
section o f this genus, characterised by being trochiform, and having a quadrangular mouth, with a sharp edged
twisted concave callosity on the columellar lip ; to which will belong.
L i t t o r i n a a u s t r a l i s .
Shell trochiform, whitish, with irregular oblique transverse black b a n d s ; whorls fla t; the last acutely
keeled, slightly wav ed ; tlie suture indistinct, slightly nodulose, front o f last w horl spirally subnodulosely r id g e d ;
outer lip black spotted ; throat pale reddish brown. Axis 8; diam. 1 0 lines.

A very variable species.
L i t t o r i n a i m b r i c a t a .
Shell trochiform, brown, varied with white between the tube rc le s; front white, brown sp o tte d ; whorls
fiat, with irregula r large nodulose protuberances ne a r the sutures, the last w horl flat and spira lly grooved in
front. Mouth ova te ; oute r lip varied with bla ck; columellar lip and throat w hitish. Axis 8 ; diam. 7 j lines.

This species chiefly differs from the last in the large nodules near the sutures and in the c o lo u r : it may
prove a variety o f it.
A S SAM IN IA . Leach, MSS.
The tentacles short, thick, with the eyes on the outer side o f their tip ; the foot ovate ; mantles and sides
of the body sim p le ; the operculum ovate, horny, spiral, o f a few whorls.
The shell is exactly like L itto r in a .
This genus w as established by D r. Leach for a shell which I discovered in the Woolwich marshes in the
year 1817. I t is referred to by D r. Fleming unde r the name o f A . Grayana. Brit. Anim. 2 7 5 ; he places it
a t the end of Lymnea, and M r. Jeffreys has referred it to th a t genus ! I t is an instance o f shells very
nearly allied in external character having different animals.
PAGODUS.
T he foot short, simple, sides o f the body quite simple ; tru n k short, an n u la r; tentacles conical, d istant a t the
ba se ; eyes on tubercles attached to their o ute r base ; penis large, exserted, club-shaped, placed a little below
and b e h in d ; the right tentacle conical and covered with minute spicula a t the tip, and with two large spinose
prominences, almost one-third down the hinder edge. The operculum suborbicular, thin, homy, o f three
or four rapidly enlarging whorls. ; {Monodonta Pagodiis. Lam.)
PA LU D IN A .
The gills are formed o f a series o f triangular plates attached to and forming an oblique line down the left
side o fth e branchial cavity.
There is an appendage on each side o f the head, arising a t the back of the tentacles, th a t of the left side is
small, that o f the right larger before. The hinder portion forms a canal as in Ampullaria.
The muscle o f a ttachment is double, the portion on the left side is the smallest. There is a similar ridge
to tha t in Ampullcaña, b ut the ridge up the back o f the neck runs more lo the left, and there is a large mass
between it and the right edge o f the body.
I s the fat mass analogous to the b ag in Am p u lla ria ?
