Eyes ne a rly seated on the base o f the tentacles.
The American and Europe an species are equally v iv ip a ro u s ; and the young are covered with bands of
hairs differing in numbe r in the different species.

The mouth simple, thickened a t th e edge, free ab o v e ; tbe gills formed o f a series o f triangular lamina
forming a line down th e right side o f the b ranchia l cavity, close by the side of the colon and ovarian tube.
The re is also a small mass o f lamell® a t the oute r left angle of the c a v ity ; the rest o f the cavity is filled with
a large fleshy bag, open by a wide s l i t ; tentacles conical, e lo n g a te ; eyes on short tubercles, b u t close to the
o ute r b ase o f the tentacles. The trunk s h o r t; front o f the side expanded into short, conical, tentacula-like lip s ;
foot simple, folded across. From the tentacles on each side to th e base of the edge o f the respiratory cavity
there is continued a broad flat plate which is largest on the left side, and which appears to be bent u p so
as to form a canal to conduct th e water to the re spira tory c av ity ; the one on the right side is folded, and
gives origin to a fleshy ridge, which extending u p th e right side, close to the side o f the colon, is continued
to the tip o f the respiratory cavity, the use o f which does n o t very readily appear. T h e penis conical, elongated,
ne a r th e tentacles, an d enclosed in a bivalve sheatli in the thickened margin o f the right side o f the
collar.
T h e reversed species {Lanisies, D e Montfort) are very like the others ; the front o f the he ad is b if id ; the
conical process o f the front o f the head and the tentacles are spirally twisted ; there is a plate on each side of
the body forming a canal to the neck ! the penis contracted into the right side of the edge of the mantle, and
there is a distinct a ir bag.—The operculum is horny, with a subcentral nucleus.
The AmpullaruB are capable o f living a long time o ut o f water, for M . Caillaud brought some specimen
to P a ris alive from the N ile ; he k ep t them in dry saw-dust.

Shell subglobula r,thickish, smooth, chesnut biown, spire as long, as the aperture, conical, blunt, whorls
five and a half, convex ; suture de ep, its edge ro u n d e d ; last whorl with a narrow w hite spira l band ; aperture

In some specimens there is a slight angle near the middle o f the last whorl. The whorls are a ll striated
by the lines of growth.
