walks—it is placed ne a r the back o f the right tentacles. The operculum is small, thin, and rather thickened
on the h inde r edge. The shell is ovate, turre ted, with a rather large mouth, having a broad canal in front,
a n d the inne r lip is rather expanded and thickened behind, where it is slightly spread out, which causes the
sutures to b e often callous.
T h e animals are found crawling on the sand in the b ays. They generally remain at the bottom of the
water, an d are easily caught alive with a bit o f meat tied a t the end o f a string, as they immediately attach
themselves to it.
Quoy in the voyage of the Astrolabe has figured two species unde r the name of Bu c c vm m -~ {S u llia )
Icevissima, t. 31. / . 14—16, and {B u llm ) achatina, t. 31. / . 1 7 .; the former o f these has the front of the foot
rounded, and the la tte r has an elongated filament on each side in front. The animal also o f B u llia Icevis

larger, more slender, smoolh, and in that the canal is smooth before the cross plait. The B u llia achatina
is found in a fossil state.
