T he head flat, not distinguishable from the body, which is scarcely con ve x ; the rostrum short, grooved, with
a very small sharp point. T lie eyes small, near the rostrum; the foramina harp-form. T h e mouth and nostrils
below, near the rostrum, and the spiracula behind, as usual.
T h e lateral fins extend to a blunt, fringed point, being internally (in respect to the body) lunated; tlie
ventral fins short. T h e tail small, tapers to a hair-like point, and is marked with cross bands, alternately
black and white, resembling the quill o f a porcupine.
T h e colour o f the head and back a d a rk -g ra y ; the be lly white.
T h e length, from the rostrum to the tail, six inches and a half. T h e tail four in ch es ; the breadth, from the

T h e head, which in many species o f the Raja, can hardly be distinguished from the body, is here, not only
considerably raised or con vex, but from the eyes, projects forward beyond the body. It is depressed on the
crown, and flattened on the sides; the rostrum rounded. T h e eyes large, oval, protuberant; the foramina
behind oblong. T h e nostrils and mouth beneath; the mouth not large ; the teeth granulous.
T h e lateral extended fins, slanting to a sharp point from the cheeks, and the posterior edges, being slightly
falcate, give exactly the appearance o f wings expanded. T h e ventral fins, close to the anus, are rounded. T h e
dorsal fin, at the origin of the tail, is small, and square-fonn. T h e tail very long, without spines, and at the point
as small as a hair.
T h e colour o f the head and body, a dark-gray, with six broad, transverse, blue bands, o f different shades : the
tail is o f a dark-gray, with a mixture o f brown.
T h e length, from the rostrum to the beginning o f the tail, six in ch es ; tlie tail, one foot six inches and
a half.

T h e body o f this large Raja is exacdy o f the form o f the Raja Aquila; but the head is flatter, projects more from
the body, and, together with the rostrum, is somewhat trigonal: the rostrum short, soft, turning up a little at
the point. T h e eyes large and protuberant, tiie pupil with a lateral direction; the foramina o f a horn-form, with
the crooked ends downwards. T h e mouth and nostrils below. T h e jaws dissimilar; the lower arched, narrow,
and projecting beyond the wider immovable upper ja w ; the edges o f both are smooth, without teeth.
T h e wings, or lateral fins, on the posterior edge are fringed. T h e orbicular ventral fins, and the small
dorsal fin, are also fringed. T h e solitary spine is at the top o f the tail, immediately below the dorsal fin.
T h e tail, is o f grea t length, tapering to a very fine point, and o f a darker colour than the body. T h e colour,
o f the head and body, a dark a s h ; the latter spotted with numerous small, round, white spots, edged with
b la ck ; the belly white.

T he sides, extended in the form o f wings, resemble the Raja Aquila, but the head and other parts arc widely
different.
T h e hack is more convex, while the head can hardly be distinguished from the back. It is broad, flat,
scarcely convex, and terminates in a thin, broad, lunated rostrum, between two singular processes, which,
rising from the side of the head, project about two inches beyond tlie crescent o f the rostrum. These,
