Tlie CïFRiNDS with four cirri ; eleven rays in tlie dorsal fin, o f wliich the th ird is long,
thick, rough, and on tlie Iiinder part serrated. All the fins have a yellowish cast.

T h e body oblong-ovate, compressed, squamous, resplendent; scales larg e, the base truncate, the posterior
margin rounded, ciliate, imbricate, tenacious.
T h e head small, declivous, compressed, obtuse, without scales, the front a little convex, smooth. Mouth
small, round, somewhat oblique ; the lips thickish. Jaws extractile, the under a little shorter, botli without
teeth. T o n g u e short, roundish, smooth, tied. T h e palate smooth. T l ie eyes high, round, p lane ; nostrils oval,
contiguous, near the edge o f the rostrum. T h e branchial opercula three-leaved, the middle le a f round, tlie first
and third angula r. T h e membrane has three stout ossicles ; the aperture lateral, large, arched. T l ie cirri v ery
short; one on the upper lip, and one at the corner o f the mouth, on each side.
T h e trunk. T h e back and abdomen arched, the former somewhat carinate, the latter convex ; the sides and
tail compressed. Branchiæ pectinate, and tuberculate. La teral lin e from the edge o f the opercula bends gen tly
downwards to the end o f the an al fin. then rising, it runs straight and middle to the tail. T h e anus very
remote.
T h e Z ks. T h e dorsal middle, consists o f three spinous, and eight sing le rays , the first o f the spinous v ery
short but sharp, the second lies close on the third, which is the longest, strong, a little curve, serrated behind,
and rough on the side; the pectoral fin low, acuminate in the middle; the v entral opposite to the dorsal, also
acuminate ; the anal close to the anus, very near the tail ; the caudal fin bifid.
T lie colour. T h e head, back, and sides a shining white ; the throat and b e lly a yellow ish white. T h e fins
whitish with a faint y e llow tint.
Length six inches,— Found in the river, and also in a tank at Casemcottah.

T h is species approached v e ry near to the Cyprinus Barbus. T h e principal difference was in the number o f
dorsal and pectoral r a y s : in all other respects it agreed with the Barbel.
It was found in a tan k near T a rto o r.

T h e body ovate, compressed, squamous, scales somewhat rounded, square-form, large, ciliate, deciduous.
T h e head, mouth, jaw s, tongue, palate, branchial membrane and aperture as before described in No. C C IV .
T h e eyes nearly middle; the opercula rounded, the last lamina with a ciliate margin. T w o o f tlie four cirri
from the corner o f the moutli, the other tw o from the nostrils.
T h e trunk. T lie back less arched than the abdomen; sides and tail compressed. T h e lateral line, without
bending down, as in the Kunnamoo, sloped gen tly before it became straight near its termination.
T h e jin s . T h e dorsal nearly middle, declining, with one short spine; the pectoral low, sm a ll; the ventral a
little more advanced than the d o r sa l; the anal remote, d eclining ; the caudal fin bifid.
T h e colour. T h e back a little darkish; the head and sides a dull silver, but splendent; the throat and b elly
w h ite; the fins darkish, y e t less so tlian the back.
