sword-form, near each other; the caudal long, entire, the middle rays a little longer than the rest, forming a
blunt, or rounded point.

on each comer o f the caudal fin.

REMARKS.
I have met with this fish at sea, o f a lighter colour, and much larger size. T h e y were foimd fixed on the
bodies o f siiarks, which had been caught by liooks, and were with difficulty separated. I do not recollect seeing
more than one on the same shark.
Branchial opercula without scales, the anterior lamina covered with a fleshy muscle, the posterior shaped like
a quadrant. T h e branchial membrane ha lf discovered, the two inferior rays much curved; the aperture
rather small.
T h e trunk. T h e back straight, round, the side con v e x ; the throat flat, the belly prominent; the tail round,
-compressed. No lateral line to be distinguished. T h e anus middle, between the head and the tail.
T h e fins. T w o dorsal, the first scapular, o f six rays with the soft points rising above the membrane: the
second lumbar, o f eleven declining ramentaceous ray s; the pectoral broad and pointed. T h e ventral united
in the manner peculiar to this genus. T h e anal has ten assurgent rays, shorter than tliose o f the second dorsal.
T h e caudal fin is ovate, with a small point.
T lie colour a dull yellow, variegated on the sides, with large dark spots ; the belly white. T iie rays o f the
dorsal and pectoral fins dotted with black; the other fins o f a darker yellow than the body, but without
dots.
In a smaller subject some dots were found on the pectoral and caudal fins.
Length from the nose to the caudal fin, one foot.

T his species was never found to exceed eight inches in length. T h e head and back were o f a very dark green,
sprinkled witli black dots. T h e belly whitish. T h e dorsal fins spotted with brown; the ventral and anal were
o f a light colour, the former with a faint yellowish cast, the latter a reddish; the caudal marked with transverse
lines o f dusky brown.— On the lateral line, on each side, were five oblong-oval, black spots.

T his species, including the tail, generally measured five inches. Its colour pale brown, with a few azure dots
scattered on the sides ; the belly whitisli. ’ Five black marks were observed on the lateral line, as in the last
species, but o f a lozenge-shape ; the form o f the caudal fin was very diffèrent, and the fins were not spotted.
