they differ.
T h e bead towards the point is more ovate, and the mouth higher, the eyes oval, the posterior nostril much
larger than the anterior; the last o f the three ray s o f the first dorsal fin is not distant from the other; the
pectoral fin is more central. T h e second dorsal fin only is streaked, as in the former, the anal and caudal

T h e head short, compressed, tlie front thick, prominent; the mouth small; the maxillee projecting, are
divided in the middle and, as in this genus, form the teeth, two above and two below. T lie eyes are close to
the vertex, in a deep rough socket, large, oval. T h e nostrils double, roundish, in the middle between the eye
and the rostrum. T h e solitary branchial aperture close to the pectoral fin, small, and a little curve.
T h e trunk: the back from the vertex, almost straight to near the dorsal fin, when it declines g en tly ; it, as
well as the sides, feels rough to the touch, but the be lly is set with visible spiculi. The re is no lateral line. T h e
anus remote, or very distant from the head.
T h e / « s : the dorsal and anal are opposite to each other, near the tail; the pectoral fins arc on a line with
the mouth, fan-form when extended ; the caudal undivided, oblong-square. T h e ventral fin (as in this genus)
wanting.
T h e colour: the back and sides are o f a dark colour, spotted with pale bluish dots on the shoulder, but with
oval spots behind the pectoral fin ; the belly a bright yellow.
T h e length, from the rostrum to the end o f the tail, four inches, three lines.
