T h E form o f this fish is that o f a flattened o rb ; to which the expanded pectoral, or lateral fins, form a broad
appendage. T h e flat head is hardly to be distinguished from the body. T h e small oval eyes, with the lunated
aperture behind tliem, are about two inches and a ha lf behind the edge o f the rounded rostrum. Beneatli, or on
the other side, (as in all this genus,) arc placed the mouth and nostrils; the former, about two inches from the
rostrum, transverse, and furnished with numerous gi-anular teeth; the latter large, open, and advanced iialf an
inch before the mouth. On each side, behind the mouth, are five branchial spiracula.
T h e sides extending circularly, form the pectoral, or lateral fins. T h e ventral fins on each side o f the anus,
with the broad tail, which is at its rise, give the appearance o f an apron-like appendage to the body. T h e two
fins on the ridge o f the tail, [or dorsal fins,) are oblong, and obtuse. T h e tail, from the first dorsal fin, is short,
broad, compressed, but diminishes and grows rounder, as it approaches to the caudal fin, which is broad,
oblique, blunt, and on the lower edge slightly fringed.
T h e colour o f the upper part, a dusky brown, spotted with equal, round, or oval, black spo ts; the under part
of the body white.
T h e length, from the rostrum to the beginning o f the tail, ten inches; the tail, to the tip o f the fin,
nine inches.
