T he body oblong-ovate, much compressed, thin, scales large, ciliate, imbricate, tenacious.
T h e declivous, thin, compressed; without scales, the front depressed, a little grooved; the rostrum
short, obtuse. T h e structure o f the mouth, the màxillæ, teeth, tongue, palate, e yes, hostrils, and opercula, as
in the preceding species, but the branclrial membrane had six rays.
T h e trunk. T h e back more arched than the abdomen, carinate ; the sides and tail compressed; the latter
ratiier broad near the fin; the abdomen rather flat. T h e branchiæ tuberculate. T h e lateral line conspicuous,
supreme, very gen tly curve to tlie end o f the dorsal fin, then straight. I 'h e anus nearer the tail than the head.
T h e / n i . T h e dorsal long, consisting o f nine spinous and ten ramous rays ; the first spine very short, the
second very strong, and ends in a setaceous tail, nearly equal in length to the body ; the other spinous rays
soft, and a little longer than the ramous. T h e pectoral fins long, narrow, falcate; the ventral long, broad;
the anal had three spines and eight small, declining, ramous, ra y s ; the caudal bifid.
T h e colour. T h e upper part o f the head and back, o f a darkisli green, all the rest, especially the breast and
abdomen, a bright silver. T h e fins glassy, with a faint yelloxv cast.
T h e fish described six inches in length, and they seldom exceed eight.

T h is fish is caught in the same season with the others, and cured in like manner. I t agrees in the structure
o f the mouth, as well as in most other characters, but differed in some not immaterial : the shape is different, the
scales larger ; the pectoral fins longer, and the anal much shorter, than in any o f tlie six preceding species ; to
which it may be added, that the branchial membrane has six rays

T he principal differences o f this pisciculus from the preceding, are a little variation in shape, the posterior portion
o f the dorsal fin by rising more in an arcli, having more o f an interrupted appearance; and the solitary spine
in the anal fin.
There is very little difference in colour, but a row o f blackish dots runs along the bottom o f tlie dorsal
fin, not found in the other.
T h e length seldom exceeds four inclies.
REMARKS.
I have before expressed my doubts of tlie propriety o f placing some o f the preceding subjects under the
genus Zeus, more especially No. L IX . which bears so strong an affinity to the genus Chietoclon. Similar
doubts subsist also in respect to No. L X V I . L X V I I , and LX V I I I . I was in hopes o f receiving, in time
before the publication o f these papers, specimens o f the above dubious fishes, from India, but have been
disappointed.
Should No, L IX . prove a Ch^todon, the smallness o f the ventral fins presents a good specific character.
