T h e colour. T h e whole fish shines as i f silverized, though the colour is rather a bright lead, than that of
pure silver.
T h e length o f the subject described, one foot six in clies; but they are brought o f a much larger size.

T h is fish has been described b y Artedi, under tlie name o f Lepturus; and b y Gronovius, under that o f G ym -
nogaster. It is a v ery common fish at Vizagapatam, and in much request among the soldiery.
I always conceived it to be the Anguilla indica in Willougliby's appendix ; and never saw the other species,
(L in n . Ed Gmel. p. 1142} with jaws o f equal length; o f a brown colour, and spotted.

T h e body long, much compressed, thin, without scales, and terminates in a v e ry small, subulate tail.
T h e head oblong, compressed, projecting, sharp, the hind part carinate, the front declivous, depressed. T h e
mouth large, straight, without lips; the under jaw sharp, and considerably longer than the upper. T ee th
regularly, but not thick set, dissimilar, the larger curve, long, ha lf bearded; the smaller straight, and sh a rp: all
firmly fixed. T h e tongue lanceolate, smooth, free. T h e palate narrow, smooth.
T h e eyes lateral, high, round, large, much nearer the rostrum than the posterior edge o f the opercula.
Nostrils solitary, round, near the orbit. Branchial opercula striate, two-leaved, acuminate. Membrane covered ;
aperture large, lateral and gular.
T h e trunk. T h e back v ery narrow, sub-carinate, almost s traight; the throat and abdomen hardly convex ;
the sides plane or compressed; the under part o f the tail straight, carinate, set with v ery small prickles, to near
its end, when it becomes extremely slender.
T h e lateral line, bending from the upper part o f the operculum to near the anus, runs afterwards low, and
parallel to the curve o f the belly and under part o f the tail. T h e anus small, two inches behind the branchial
aperture.
T h e fn s . T h e only fins are the dorsal and pectoral; the first rising from the hind head, is continued to
within an inch o f the point o f the tail, It is narrow and nearly o f equal breadth, till toward its e n d : the pectoral
is situated low, small, falcate.

T h e body nearly rliomb-forin, much compressed, smooth, covered with small orbicular scales, close, imbricate,
tenacious.
T h e head small, much compressed, obtuse, without scales, the front declivous. T h e mouth under the bluiit
nose, small, a little oblique; the lips simple. T h e lower jaw somewhat extractile, the upper immoveable : both
short and set with numerous small teeth. T ongu e roundish, short, smooth, tied. T h e palate smooth. T h e
eyes middle, near the rostrum, orbicular, moderate size. Nostrils near the edge o f the rostrum, double, the
posterior (which is the biggest) oval, the anterior round.
T h e branchial opercula, smooth, ciliate at the edge, bridled so as hardly to be moveable, or to admit seeing
the membrane.
