T his in general agrees with the preceding fish. It has no pectoral fins; the single ventral fin is joined to the
anal by a membrane, the anus being on one side o f the carina; and the junction o f the dorsal and anal fins
with the pointed caudal, is alike in both. T h e re are also two lateral lines on each s id e ; but besides these, there
is here a third undulating, carinated line, from the corner o f the mouth to the edge o f the operculum. Other
circumstances in which they differ are the fo llow in g : tlie aperture o f the mouth is not smooth on the coloured
side, as in the former, but wrinkled and cirrous both above and be low ; the scales are smaller, as well as
rougher, and the inferior edges tipped o f a dusky white, gives a mixed colour, different from the uniform dark
colour o f the other sole, while the white o f the right side is less p u re : lastly, there is a marked difference in
the number o f dorsal and anal rays.
T h e length, ten in ch e s ; greatest breadth two inches four lines.
R EMARKS.
In this fish, Bloch met with the first instance o f two lateral lines on the same side.

T he body round-ovate, much compressed, and the edges ca r in a te ; the left side dusky with a greenish cast,
spotted with large, round, brown, spots; the other side o f a bluish white.
T h e head small, compressed; the face without scales. T h e mouth terminal, la rg e ; the jaws extractile, the
upper a little curve, the lower con vex; both with a regular row o f recurve, sharp teeth. T h e tongue awl-shape,
blunt, smooth.
T lie eyes on the left side, near the vertex, tlie one exactly under the other, oval, large. T lie nostrils, on a
line also, nearer the edge of the rostrum. T h e second branchial opercula pointed.
T h e lateral line forms a high arch above the pectoral fin, then sloping gently, it becomes straigh t: on each
side o f the straight part, is a faint, somewhat curve line. T h e anus between the ventral fins.
The_^?ii. T h e dorsal rises above the eyes, and, like the opposite anal, widening a little as it decends, both
terminate near the ta i l; two ventral fins larger than u sua l; the pectoral high, the rays d eclining; the caudal
fin distinct, broad, pentagonal.
Length, from the rostrum to the caudal fin, eight inches; the greatest breadth, four.

T his fish agrees with its genus in the compressed form of its body, and the different colour o f the opposite
sides ; it resembles the fish last described, in the form o f the jaw s , and the lateral line, as also in its oval
shape. The re are no teeth in the jaws ; the cheeks membranous ; the lower eye nearer the edge o f the mouth,
the rays o f the dorsal and anal fins are proportionally longer, and, as well as the tail, are always spotted ; the
oblong pointed tail, is very different from the former: the situation o f the pectoral and ventral fins is the
same.
T h e colour o f the left side is very dark, sometimes obscurely spotted with brown ; the spots on the fins are
black; but the spots placed triagonally on the back (which seem to be constant) afford a good specific
character : T h e two anterior are exactly round, je t black, with a white dot in the centre, and a rim o f dusky
white : the posterior o f the same colour, is exactly triangular, and placed on the lateral line.
T h e length, from the rostrum to the point o f the tail, five inches, six lines.
