are arched, the middle rays in eaeh being longest. T h e same remark may be made on the anal, which is
hardly ha lf so long. T h e pectoral flns, v e ry low , about the length o f the head, acuminate above. T h e ventral
d ose together, shorter than the pectoral; the caudal slightly arched.
T h e colour. T h e ground colour a yellowish-white; a dark brown band from the ridge o f the ba ck crosses
the face to the th ro a t; seven or eight y e llow lines run obliquely, parallel to each other, from the back towards
the head and opercula, and from the last o f these a dozen o f similar lines run obliquely towards the tail and
anal iin. T h e spines o f the dorsal and anal fins are o f a reddish brown, the whole o f the soft fins m both are
o f a dark chesnut, but the anal has a cross fillet o f bright ye llow, and the fibrous edge is o f the same colour;
the pectoral aud ventral are whitish; the caudal yellow, with a transverse band o f dark purple m the m.ddle,
and a border o f reddish brown at the extremity.
T h e length, five inches three lines; the breadth three inches, six lines.

taken in the variation o f the shape o f the mouth, as the latter does o f the colour o f the whole fish.

T he hody in its compressed form, its small, roughish scales, carinated back and belly, the arched lateral line,
and position of the fins, agrees with the general characters, only that the fins are not squamous.
T h e bead large, the front v ery declivous from the e ye to the rostrum, which projects a little. T h e mouth,
lips and jaws as u su a l: but the teeth are strong, semi-conical, not setaceous ; the tongue free, obtuse, and
smooth; the palate also smooth.
T h e > s . T h e first spine o f the dorsal very short, the others, as w e ll as the soft rays, assurgent till near the
end. where the rays shorten, g iv ing a roundness to the hinder part o f the f in ; the anal assumes the same
fo rm ; the pectoral short, acuminate in the middle; the ventral fins o f the same length, with a setaceous po in t;
the caudal exactly equal, or truncate.
T h e colour of the upper part o f the head, and the back, v ery dark, but on the sides it changes to a dark
blue, variegated by four black streaks running from the ridge o f the back to near the belly. A streak somewhat
lighter crosses the face, from the crown to the thro at; while another like those on the sides, sometimes
crosses the ta i l; but in the subject drawn there were on ly two black dots. T h e fins were o f a v ery dark blue,
or, in some lights, a bla ck colour.
T h e length, including the caudal fin, three inches and a half.

T he body sub-orbicular, compressed, the scales large, roundish, tenaceous, and extended on the fins.
T h e head small, compressed, squamous, except the rostrum which is naked, smooth. T h e mouth, teeth, and
tongue, as usual, but the lips are thickish, and the palate tuberculate. T h e eyes, high, oval. T h e nostrils
single, lower than the orbit, and nearer the rostrum. T h e opercula squamous, and moves freely ; the branchial
membrane is readily discovered.
T h e tnink. T h e back arched, carinate, the breast convex ; the belly straight and thin ; the tail unusually
broad. T h e lateral line conspicuous, slightly arched, and terminates at a round black spot on the upper edge
o f the tail. T h e anus a little nearer the tail than the head.
Thofins. T h e dorsal spines only a little arched, being nearly o f equal len g th ; the hinder part o f the fin
broader, and acuminate in the middle; the pectoral and ventral o f moderate length, acuminate at top; the
anal has only two spines, and the other rays are o f the same form with the dorsal; the caudal divided,
but not deeply.
T h e colour of the back above the line, a pale yellow, with six darkish bands, which are extended on the
dorsal fin ; the rest o f the body cinerlous, growing lighter on the belly. T h e fins are o f a dark colour.
T h e length, mcliitling the tail, six indies six lines.
