s that part o f the back which descends abruptly to the tail, and consists o f sixteen soft, declining rays.
T h e dorsal as well as all the other fins, except the pectoral, are covered with scales from the roots for some
w a y upwards. T h e pectoral low, short, broad, declining; the ventral behind the pectoral, the second and
third rays fibrous; the anal spines four, very strong, the other part o f the fin resembles the soft rays
o f the dorsal; the caudal fin almost equal, the three middle rays only a little longer than the rest.
T h e colour o f the fish a darkish g re y which brightens towards the b e lly ; the breast ye llowish-w hite; the
sides variegated by nnmerous round, black spots, as are also part o f the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. T h e
rays o f the fins in general darkish ; and it may be remarked that the soft rays of the dorsal and anal fins, as
well as the tail, remain expanded after death.
T h e length from the rostrum to the caudal fin nine inches; the broadest jxirt o f the trunk, six inches,
three lines.

T h is fish seldom, or never, appears at the Euro{jean tables at Vizagapatam. Bloch mentions it as a
remarkable circumstance that petrifactions o f this species are found in the mountains o f Bilka in Italy.

T he body somewhat orbicular, much compressed, nearly as broad as long. T h e scales oval, imbricate, and
cover part of all the fins, except the pectoral.
T h e head large, much compressed; from the knob between the eyes to the rostrum very steep, without
scales, except the front. T h e mouth low, very small, terminal, horizontal; lips thickish. Jaws extractile, the
upper a little longer than the under; the teeth setaceous, numerous, close, equal; the tongue oblong, smooth,
retracted, tied. T h e palate smooth.
T h e eyes supreme, distant from the point o f the rostrum, large, orbicular, not prominent. T h e opercula
smooth, without scales, the posterior le a f ciliate, acuminate. T h e branchial membrane expo sed ; the aperture
large, lateral.
T h e trunk. T h e back assurgent and carinate to the dorsal-spines, where it rises into a sort o f hump and
then descends gradually, but convex, to the ta il; in the opposite direction, the line from the lower jaw to the
anal fin, inclines gen tly , and then ascends circularly. T h e sides much compressed; the tail thin. T lie
lateral line springing from the upper edge o f the operculum, forms rather a lower arch, than in the former
fish, but in like manner becomes straight near the end o f the tail. T h e anus equidistant, oval.
T h e / « i . T h e three first dorsal spines very short and small, and none o f them nearly so robust as in the
last fish, the soft rays form an arch. T h e pectoral fin v ery long, falcate. T h e first and second ventral rays,
terminate in a setaceous thread. T h e first and last anal spines short, the soft rays somewhat arched. 1 he
caudal fin intire, but the blunt projection in the middle rather more conspicuous.
Th e fins remain expanded after death, as in the former fish.
T h e colour o f the ujiper parts a light gray, on a silvery ground, reflecting various tints in different lights,
which growing lighter and lighter towards the belly, terminate in a rich mother o f pearl. T h e knob between
the eyes, the face, the opercula, and the breast look as if silverized; but what^dds greatly to the beauty o f the
fi.sh are small round spots o f dark green and gold, disposed in regular transverse rows on the sides.

T he body o f this species in its form comes near the Latte. It is equally compressed and thin.
T h e head in its form, as well as the face, agree with the Latte ; the position o f the eyes, the nostrils, and the -
mouth, the lips, the tongue, and the palate are alike in both ; but there is a variation in the teeth: the regular
row is here wanting, the jaws only feel like a file, and in the upper are a few small curve teeth. There are a
few scales on the lower part of the face, but the opercula are naked. T h e branchial membrane very visible.
T h e trunk. T h e back assurgent as in tlie Latte; the hump less, and tlie declivity from the dorsal spines
less curve. T h e belly part of the fish as in the Latte ; the hinder part to the tail more in a straight line; the
lateral line and the anus in form and situation the same in both.
T he jÎKi in situation and shape agree very nearly also with those of the Latte. T h e three last dorsal spines
are longer, and the posterior part o f the fin more completely arched ; the tliree anal spines are distinct,
seemingly not connected with the anal soft rayé.
T h e colour o f the back gray, the face and belly silvery. T lie anterior part o f the back, the membranes of
the dorsal and anal fins, red ; all the other fins are o f a dull yellow ; the opercula of a pale red.
