T h e singular form o f the balance, or hammer-headed shark, sufficiently distinguishes it, not only from others
o f the same genus, but from all other fish whatsoever. It has five spiracles on each side; the mouth is
furnished with several rows o f teeth; the eyes large, and the apertures behind them oblong; the anal and
hinder dorsal fins small.
T h e subject drawn, measured twenty-two inches.
T h e y are seldom found o f a larg er size a t V iza gapa tam; but are said, in other parts, to arrive to the size of
four or five feet.
T h is and the Z y g^ n a are rather rare at Vizagapatam, and are seldom brought larger than twenty inches, or
two feet, in length. I never happened to meet with either at sea.

behind the eyes, linear, slanting.

T his differs chiefly from the last in the distance o f the nostrils from the eyes; and the size and shape o f the
caudal fin. In the want o f the foramina, in the mouth, teeth, the disposition o f the fins, and roughness o f the
skin, they agree. There is no visible lateral line.
T h e colour, is a little lighter than the former.
