T h e body oblong, and somewhat wedge-form, the back and breast a little rough, the rest smooth.
T h e head large, as broad as the body, depressed above, on the sides compressed, the front declining in an
oblique line to the obtuse rostrum. T h e mouth terminal, but lower than the middle; the lips flaccid. T h e
jaws extractile, the upper longer than the low e r ; teeth as usual in this genus. T h e tongue thick, obtuse,
smooth, sheathed. T h e eyes large, roundish, high, covered b y the skin o f the head. T h e nostrils in the middle,
between the orbit and rostrum, double, or, i f single, divided b y a valve.

the sides a little compressed and smooth ; the belly prickly, prominent, and capable o f great distention. T h e

breast and b e l ly ; the belly a stone white. T h e fins have a yellowish colour, the lower part o f the anal and
caudal excepted, which are whitish.

T h e appearance o f the Syngnathus, with its slender and crusted body, is more that o f an insect than a fish.
T h e mouth is extremely small, and covered b y the under jaw, which turning up at the point, and being longer
than the upper, closes the mouth as witli a lid. T h e dorsal fin consists o f equal rays, the pectoral rounded;
the tail undivided, the rays distinct and sharpish.
