the tongue short, sharp-pointed, and loose, the eyes o f a beautiful emerald colour. T h e branchial membrane

T h is small fish agreeing in its general form with the preceding, differs in the following circumstances. T h e
eyes are placed less obliquely, round, and much smaller; the first ray o f the dorsal fin thick, and longer tlian
the others; the pectoral fins are wanting ; the ventral much smaller, and ju s t above the anus, which is in the
carina o f the abdomen.
T h e mouth, tongue, nostrils, junction o f the dorsal and anal fins with the tail, are all as in the fish last
described, but the lateral line rising nearer the mouth, forms a small arch before it becomes straight.
T h e colour o f the right side dark gray, with cross fillets o f light brown from the front to the ta il; the
caudal fin spotted with brown spots with black edges ; the left side light coloured.

T h e body lanceolate, much compressed; scales rather small, orbicular, imbricate, adherent, feel rough when
stroked upwards. O f a dark colour on the left side, and white on the other.
T h e head narrower than the body, ovate, compressed; the rostrum long, compressed. T h e mouth not
terminal, as in the English sole, but at some distance from the extremity o f the rostrum, on the verge o f the
abdomen ; not corrugated on the dark or left side, but rough with some small tubercles and pili on the white
side. T h e tongue and teetli as in No. L X X .
T lie eyes placed obliquely (though sometimes on an even line) between the lateral line and corner o f the
moiitli, small, orbicular. T h e nostrils single, divided by a membrane: and situated between the eyes, or rather
a little nearer the nose.
T h e trunk. T h e back and abdomen carinate; the tail terminates in a sharp point. T h e principal lateral
line commences at the middle point o f the rostrum, and bending gently over the eyes, proceeds in a straight
line to the tail. T h e second line is much liigher, and runs parallel with the back. T lie anus is not in the
carina o f the abdomen, but a little on one side, giving place for a membrane which connects the ventral fin
with the anal.
T h e > s . T h e long dorsal risas at the centre of the rostrum; the anal near llie branchial aperture: they are
o f equal breadth, and botli are united with the caudal fin. in su cha wa y as hardly to be distinguished, and, with
the few caudal rays, composing the pyramidal sharp pointed tail. T h e re are no pectoral fin s ; and the solitary
ventral is connected with the anal.
T h e colour o f the left side blackish ¡ o f the right white; the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, have a purplish
cast.
Length o f the subject de.scribed, one foot five inches; greatest breadth, three inches two lines,
REMARKS.
This IS the sole most common in India, and reckoned in delicacy even superior to that o f England. T h e
specimen drawn was o f the largest size found at Vizagapatam ; but, at Caringa, f have seen them considerably
larger.
