Th e colour. T h e front adorned with several rows o f small azure dots, and the cheeks and opercula with
curve and straiglit lines of the same colour, some dots being interspersed: all on a changeable gold ground.
T h e scales are of a dark ash-colour, with azure edges, giving an elegant appearance to the whole tru n k ; and
on the lateral line is an orbicular mark, blue, brown, and white, T h e dorsal fin and upper half of the caudal a
yellowisli brown; the pectoral gray, the other fins blue.
Th e length of the subject described, six inches; but I have seen others nearly two feet lo n g ; and in such the
colours were less vivid.

T he body ovate, the head rather more pointed than usual in tiiis genus ; the anterior lamina o f the opercula
serrated.
T h e colour of the head purplish, and faint red, but the opercula towards the branchiæ golden. T h e back has
a dull greenish cast, with several curve dark fillets, running from the opercula to the tail; but below the line,
the colour grows gradually lighter on the sides, changing on the belly to a pale yellow ; the breast white with
a yellow cast. T h e sides are also striped with dusky, straight fillets, and between the dorsal fin and lateral
line there is an orbicular, blackisii, spot. T h e fins are o f a reddish yellow, the edge o f the dorsal and caudal
membranes orange.

T he form of the head and position of the eyes nearly the same as in the last, the operculum also serrate; but
the body is more o f an oblong shape and the lateral line less arclied.
T h e colour. T h e head red, shining as if varnished ; the back o f a darker red, which below the line brightens
nearly to pink; the belly a yellowish white; the breast white. Above the line, three or four darkish yellow
lines run from the ridge o f the back to the hind head ; and below the line, two fillets o f the same colour run
straight to the caudal fin, while the other two o f lighter yellow, and a little curve, run from the face to the anal
fin : besides these, tliere is a remarkable oblong, black spot touching the lateral line. T h e dorsal and caudal
fins are of a dull purple, the latter edged red ; the other fins are yellow. Tliese colours vary in subjects o f
different ages, but the spot on tlie lateral line is constant.

T his species, which is richly coloured, differs in the form o f its body from those last described. T h e back is
more arched; the breast and belly straighter; the scales smaller than usual in this genus, and the hinder part
o f the dorsal, as well as the anal fin, remarkably acuminate. T h e tail slightly bifid.
The eyes oval; nostrils small, distant from each o ther; the tongue long, lanceolate, smooth, free. Teeth
regular, not c lose; some teeth in tlie palate. The first lamina o f the opercula slightly serrated. T h e lateral
line conspicuous but not carinate.
The front and rostrum are o f a deep blood colour, the rest o f the face and Bps pin k; two very broad bands
o f a still deeper red than the front, cross the trunk; one from the points o f the three first dorsal spines to the
ventral Sn, the other from the margin o f the hinder dorsal, curves to the under margin o f the caudal, on which
it is continued; the interstices between them a light gray, variegated with transverse lines o f white dots. T h e
throat white; the belly pale pink. T h e pectoral fin is pink; the dorsal, ventral, and anai, with the points of
the caudal lobes, look as i f dipped in blood.
