I N T R O D U C T I O N .
AS the Nervous Syftem is the m e dmm interpofed between the living
p r i n c i p l e and the feveral organs which compof e the bodies o f anim
a l s , an e x a d knowledge of its ftruiture and fundions muft appear to the
p h i l o f o p h e r , as well as t o the phyfician, of high importance in the ftudy
o f nature.
T h e brain, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, medulla fpinalis, and the
n e r v e s , with their ganglia, form this fyftem.
O f tliefe parts I fliall treat in the order i n w h i c h I have enumerated them,
c o n f i n i n g m y obfervations, as m u c h as poffible, to fueh fads and cireumftances
as have not been afeertaincd, o r have been altogether overlooked by
a n a t o m i f t s and phyfiologills.
