numerous and as diftinft in the nerves -within the head, or in the nerves
which feem fo fixed in their place as to be little fubjea to unequal extenfion,
as the fifth pair is at the fides of the fella turcica, or the great fympathetic
within the thorax, as they are in the nerves of the mufcles. Hence they
feem alfo intended to increafe the furface of the nerves, and the extent of
their pia mater.
The fpinal marrow has likewife a number of tranfverfe furrows or hues,
which very evidently ferve the purpofe of joints or folds

HEN we eonfider the dehneations given by authors of the man^
ner of the conneSion of the nerves, we fliall find three modes of
In the firjl place, nerves are reprefented joined together at acute angles,
forming what have been generally named Plexufes.
Secondly, Nerves running in oppofite direftions, are connefted by their
fmall branches, or apices of thefe branches, forming net-works, which, at
firll fight, feem to refemble the anaftomofes of fmall blood-velTels.
Thirdly, in certain places of the body, feveral nerves enter into a knot,
called a Ganglion, and from the oppofite fide of the knot nerves are fent
out.
The nature of thefe modes of connedion we ihall next examine.
