Dr Haller, then, inftead of folving the problem lie had undertaken,
merely ftarts another, equally difficult of folu^on, depending on Hmllar
principles.
In like manner, Dr Haller tells us, that a cliild after birth can fwallow,
becaufe, before birth, it was in the pradice of fwallowing the liquor amnii.
But fuppofmg the liquor amnii to be fwallowcd, I would aik how it got
down the firft mouthful it took of that Hquor ? And how, immediately after
birth, it fucks, fneezes, coughs, &c. funftions of which there could
have been no experience in the womb ?
When we throw into the fcale the various eflfeds of what has been commonly
called tlie inilinfl: of animals, does it not appear, that the moft juft,
as well as moft becoming conclufion we can draw, is, that the Power
which created all things, which gave life to animals and motion to the
heavenly bodies, continues to aft upon, and to maintain all, by the unceafmg
influence of a living principle pei-vading the univerfe, the nature of
which our faculties are incapable of duly comprehending ?
