It has been fufpe6led b y Mr. Salifbury that the plant here defcribed agrees altogether in generic
chara&er with Cateibsea. Nor can this be denied with refpeft to the flower; but i f we may rely
on Catelby, the fruit o f his plant, being a berry with a fingle cell,, cannot agree with Portlandia.
I allow however his authority is but flight. Future obfervations muft determine the point.
The fynonym o f Jacquin appears doubtful to me on account o f the inequality at the bafe o f the
leaves in his figure, which is never the cafe in our plant, nor have I found it fo in any fpecimen
o f Portlandia in Sir Jofeph Banks’s herbarium. The remark o f Linnaus, Mantilla p. 45, where
he makes this inequality a diftin&ion between P. grandiflora and P. hexandra, ought certainly to
be cancelled. T he latter fpecies is belt diftinguiflied b y the lanceolate leaves o f its calyx, temate
flower-ftalks, ovate leaves, and flowers only one third the fize o f our Portlandia (fee the ttanlcfian
herbarium and Jacquin's figure, t. 182, £ 20), not fo much b y its' fix ftamina and fix divifions o f
the flower, for this is occafionally found to take place in P. grandiflora, both at the Marchionels o f
Rockingham’s and the Duke o f Northumberland’s.
