Mayer, however, states, that in the climate of Wurzburg,
in good seasons, it ripened perfectly: and
even in countries much farther north, such as Denmark
and Sweden. It will succeed very well in this
country as dwarfs, or half standard's, grafted on
Paradise stocks. It requires a rich soil, but not too
moist; and the tree must be pruned so as to admit
the rays of the sun, and a free circulation of air,
among the branches.
A good bearer, in perfection during the winter
and spring, and is a dessert Apple of the first excellence.
S hoots tolerably strong, moderately sprinkled
with whitish spots, and for the most part covered
with a silvery cuticle and gray pube sc enc e : where
bare, of a chestnut colour.
Leaves middle - sized, ovate, tapering to the
point, coarsely and unequally serrated. P etioles
moderately strong, rather longish. S tipules linear,
sickle-shaped.
F lowers middle-sized. P etals ovate oblong,
nearly fiat, with a longish claw.
F ruit middle-sized, in general roundish, fiattened
at the ends, rather broadest at the base ; the
outline obtusely angular. E ye in a tolerably deep,
even hollow. S talk about half an inch in length,
of medium thickness, inserted in a middle-sized,
regularly-formed cavity. S kin covered with brownish
gray russet, sometimes almost closely and uniformly
; at other times having intervals nearly
smooth, shewing the olive ground-colour of the
skin, and marked with some russet scars. F lesh
yellow, moderately juicy, very sugary, combined
with an agreeably rich acidity. R. T.
