An. adequate fura was allowed by the emprefs Elizabeth
for their.maintenance; but, fome time after thek' arrival
at Kolmogori, great part o f it- was- withheld from them by
thofe who fopplied their table; and they had fcarcely common
neceffaries. Some perfons however,, moved with companion
for. 'their unhappy deftiny,. found means to acquaint
the .prefent emprefs with this circumftance > who iftued
immediate orders that they ihould be provided with every
poffibiecomfort which they could receive under their un~
happy Situation: and thefe orders were punctually obeyed.,

Catharine II-. whofe good fenfe raifes her. above the ufuali

humanity, releafed from their long confinement the remaining
branches o f this illuftrious family. In the fame year
in which their father expired, two princes.and as many prin-
ceffes, o f whom the eldeft is above 40 years old, were removed
from Kolmogori to. Archangel, and conveyed in a
Ruflian velfel to Bergen, in Norway. There,they embarked
on board o f the Mars,.a Danifh man o f war^and -were landed,
in the month o f Oitober,. at Flatftrand in Jutland,; from,
which place they wereconducted to Aliens, where they now
refide,. under the care and protection of their aunt the queeti-
dowager o f Denmark. The emprefs o f Ruffia ..allots a con-
fiderable penfion for their fubfiftence.
Having had frequent oecafion to mention- count Munich,,
I fhall here throw together a few biographical anecdotes of
that extraordinary man, who enjoyed the favour o f five fo-
vereigns o f Ruffia ; who. attained,, at one period of his life,

the higheft honours ; and at another was doomed to a rigo-
rous confinement o f twenty years, which he fiiftained with *— ,— *
an unbroken fpirit *.
Count Blirchard Chriftopher Munich, fon o f à Daniffi officer,
was born at New-Huntorf, in the county o f Olden-
burgh, on the 9th o f May, O. S. 168 3. He received an excellent
education ; and, in the 1 7th year o f his age, entered
into the fervice o f the Landgrave o f HeiTe-Darmftadt,
who, on account Of his knowledge in tactics, conferred upon
him the tank o f captain. He ferved his fir ft campaign in
1701,, when the emperor Jofeph commanded again ft the
French.; and was prefent at the fiege o f Lattdaw. In 1705
h e was employed as a major by the Landgrave o f Hefle-
Caffel ; and learned the art o f war under thé duke o f
Marlborough and prince Eugene. Tie diftinguiffied him-
fe lf for his cool intrepidity in feveral engagements and
fieges, and particularly at the battle o f Malplaquet, when,
in recompence for his bravery, he was made lieutenant-
colonel. Being, in 1 7 1 2 , dangeroufly wounded at thé
battle o f Denain, he was taken prifoner by the French ;
and foon after his releafe, in the enfuing year, raifed to the
command Of a regiment.
In 1 7 16 he quitted the Heffian, and entered the Poiiffi
fervi'ce, under Auguftus II. and was foon promoted to the
•rank o f major-general; but, in 1 72 1 , being infulted by
count Fleming, the king's favourite, he went into P.uffia, and
-Was received in the moft honourable manner b y .Peter I.
