the largeft whereof was only fix fpans long, two broad, and
two thick, and which tradition reports to be the Morajieen.
T h e others are exceedingly fmall. I conld trace upon fe-
veral the figures o f a crois and globe coarfely carved; and
upon one, in particular, which was very antient, the three
crowns, the arms o f Sweden. I difcovered a few traces of in-
fcriptions, feemingly in Gothick charadters, but fo imperfeft,
that I did not attempt to decypher # them. A few years ago
thefe remains o f Swediih antiquity were covered only with
a wooden ihed ; but they are now preferved in a brick building,
conftrutfted at his prefent majefty’s expence in honour
o f his royal anceftors. An infcription in Swedifh upon the
infide walls enumerates the names of the feveral kings who
were enthroned upon this fpot. They are king Euge, 1060,
with whom this cuftom is faid to have taken its rile ; king

Olaus Magnus relates, that the Morajieen was placed in
the midft of twelve other ftones in a circle. Camden thus
defcribes a fimilar monument near the village o f Saint Bu-
riens, iq Cornwall. “ Not far from hence, in a place ca lled
“ Bifeaw-woune, are nineteen ftones fet in a circle, about
“ twelve foot diftant one from another; and in the center
“ there ftands one much larger than any o f the reft. One
