T h e diftance from Eliinoor to Copenhagen- is about 20
miles; our route lay occafionally by the fide o f the fea;
fometimes through fmall woods o f beech and oak, and at
other times through an open country riling into declivities-;
the- foil is fandy mixed with loam,, well cultivated,.and yields
-all forts o f grain. T h e cottages are numerous and neat,
built with brick, and many o f them white-walhed. We
had an excellent road, for which convenience we paid feveral
tolls ; a tax from which we had been exempted'in-Poland,
Rufiia, and Sweden. We reached the metropolis towards
the clpfe o f the evening.
Copenhagen Handsupon a-fmall promontory on the eaft-
ern coaft o f the Ille o f Zealand ; the fite is flat, and rather
marfhy. It formerly belonged to the: bilhop o f Rofklld, and
was not diftinguilhed - by the royal refidence until 1443,
during the reign o f Chriftoplier o f Bavaria.; fince which
period it. has been gradually enlarged and beautified, and
is become the capital o f Denmark.
The annual lift o f births in Copenhagen being, upon an
average o f feveral years, eftknated at 2 830, and o f deaths at
3955? we ma7 compute that itcontains near 80,000 inhabitants.
Copenhagen is the beft built city o f the north ; for although
Peteriburgh excells it in fuperb edifices, yet, as it
contains no wooden houfes, it does not difplay that ftriking
contrail of meannefs and magnificence, but in general exhibits
a more equable and uniform appearance. The town is
furrounded towards the land with regular ramparts and baf-
