b o o k To begin with the infantry. Before the late augmenta-
— ’tion, every regiment, when complete, confifted o f 26 officers,
and 1632 privates, divided into ten companies of fufileers,
and two o f grenadiers. Of thefe 1632 privates, 480, who
are chiefly foreigners enlifted in Germany, are regulars. The
remaining 1 15 2 are the national militia, or peafants, who
refide upon the eftates o f their landholders, each eftate fur-
nifhing a certain number in proportion to its value.
Thefe national troops are occafionally exercifed in fmall
corps upon Sundays and holidays; and are embodied once
every year, for about 17 days, in their refpedtive diilridts'.
By a late addition o f 1 o men to each company, a regiment
o f infantry is increafed to 1778 troops including officers.
The expenee o f each regiment, which before amounted to
£6000, has been raifed by the late augmentation to^8000.
The cavalry is upon the fame footing; each regiment
confiding o f 17 officers, including ferjeants and corporal's,
and 563 privates, divided into five fquadrons. Of thefe about
260 are regular, and the remainder national troops.
The regiments of foot and horfe guards are regulars; the
former is compofed of 21 officers and 465 men in five companies
; and the latter o f 7 officers and 15 4 men in two^
fquadrons.
a. The forces o f Norway are all national troops or militia,
excepting the two regiments o f Sundenfield and Nordenfield.
And as the peafants o f that kingdom are free,, the forces
are levied in a different manner from thofe o f Denmark.
Norway is divided into a certain number o f diftriits, each
whereof furnifhes a foldier. All the peafants are, upon their
birth, regiftered for the militia ; and the fir ft on the lift fup-
plies the vacancy for the diftrjit to which he belongs. After
having ferved from ten to fourteen years, they are. admitted
among
among the invalids; and, when they have attained the feniority
o f that corps, receive their difmiffion. Thefe troops are not
continually under arms, but are only occafionally exercifed,
like the national forces o f Denmark. A fixed ftipend is af-
figned to the officers, nearly equal to that o f the officers in
the regulars: but the common foldiers do not receive any
pay, except when they are in adlual fervice, or perform ing
their annual manoeuvres.
The Academy of Land Cadets, inftituted by Frederick IV.
fupplies the army with officers. According to this foundation,
74 cadets are inftru£ted in the military fciences at the
expence o f the king.
