and rofes in the ihoes: the cloak is o f black doth edged CHA*-
with red fattin; the coat or jacket, and breeches, are alfo ■ ,
black, ornamented with red ftripes and buttons; the
waiftcoat, the faih, the pinks at the knees, and rofes for
the ihoes, are o f red fattin, The drefs o f the ladies is
a black filk robe with flit fleeves puffed with white gauze,
coloured faih and ribbands. This is the ufual court apparel,
On folemn feftivals the men wear white cloth or
fattin, lined and ftriped with red fattin; the women white
filk or fattin, with coloured ribbands and faih. The men,
who have not been prefented at court, are dreifed almoft
entirely in black, without any red lining and ornaments ;
and the women o f the fame defcription mud not appear with
the white gauze fleeves. In other refpefts, their attire is
fimilar to that juft defended.
About half paft feven the king and queen entered
the drawing-room, both in the national habit. His ma-
jefty paired gradually from one, end o f the apartment to
the other, addreffed himfelf to different perfons with
great vivacity; and faluted, according to the etiquette o f
the court, every fenator’s lady. Being prefented to the
king and queen, his majefty did us the honour to con-
verfe with each o f us for a confiderable time with great
condefcenfion and affability. At the conclufion o f this ceremony
they withdrew into an adjacent apartment, and
were followed by great part o f the company. The king
played at trente et quarante with about twenty perfons
and the queen fat down to ambre. About nine their ma-
jefties quitted play, and, repairing to another apartment,
upped in publick : the princefs Sophia, Albertina was the
only perfon who fat down to table with them, that honour'
being on thefe occafions confined to the royal family. O d d o -
