the profpeit o f again inhabiting his favourite palace, excited
i fuch tranfports o f joy, that he compared himfelf to a perfon
recalled from death *.
Being conducted to Callenborg, he had the fatisfadtion o f
■finding thefe promifes religioufly fulfilled. He furvived this
happy change ten years; and his mind had been fo foftened
by adverfity, that, old as he was, his death was faid to be
haftened by his afflidfion for the lofs o f his benefactor Chrif-
tian 111. He died on the 24th of January, 15 5 9 , in the 78 th
year o f his age, and in the 36th from the period o f his de-
pofition +.
April 9th, we arrived at Aliens, juft mentioned as the
place o f meeting between Chriftian II. and Chriftian III.; it
itands upon the Little Belt, a ftrait o f the Baltick, which fe-
parates the Iile o f Funen from the continent. This ifland is
about 340 miles in circumference ; is remarkably fertile in
pafture and grain ; and exports annually to Norway barley,
oats, rye, and peafe. The country is open, with a gently
undulating fur face; anditscoaftsare generally fiat and fandy.
The paflage acrols the Little Belt is only nine miles ; but
as the wind was contrary, we were engaged five hours in performing
it. We landed upon the duchy of Slefwick at Ar-
roe-Sund, fo called from the little ifland Arroe, contiguous
to the continent.
On the 1 ith we pafied through feveral fmall, but neat
towns, beautifully fituated upon inlets o f the Baltick; and

The inhabitants poflefs at leaft 2 o o. veflels ;. and carry o n ^ _ j
no inconfiderable trade to the Weft Indies. They traffick
alfo to Norway, where they procure falted fifh, which they
carry to the Mediterranean ; and bring back wines-and dried ■
fruits to Holland, Peterfburgh, ,and. the ports o f the Baltick.
The duchy o f Slefwick, fometimes called South Jutland,,
is feparated from Holftein,.. or the king of Denmark’s
German dominions, by the Eyder, The. capital is an irregularly
built town of great length, and contains about 5630
inhabitants.. The- houfes are o f brick.; and,,, like thofe of.
all the other towns in the country, refemble in neatnefs and
manner o f building thofe o f Holland : the inhabitants drefs
alfo like the Dutch ;. and many o f them fpeak their tongue, ■
though the ufual languages are the German and Danifh.
Clofe to Slefwick is the old palace o f Gottorp, formerly
the ducal refid6nce ;. at prefent inhabited by the ftadtholder,.
or governor, prince Charles o f Hefle-Gafi'cl, who married
Louifa princefs o f Denmark. It is a large brick building,.
furrounded by a rampart and moat: from this-caftle the ducal
line, formed by Adolphus fon of Frederick.I. king of
Denmark,, was denominated Holftein-Gottorp,,. which ftill
fubiifts in the perfon o f the prefent great-dukeof Ruffia.
That part o f the duchy which we traverfed feemed well
cultivated: it was in general flat and open, but occafionaily
exhibited variegated landfcapes o f heath, arable land, and
pafture, enclofed with quickfet hedges, and ftuddedat intervals
with woods of beech and oak. The farm-houfes had -
the appearance o f great neatnefs. We pafied alfo ranges o f ■
new cottages,-lately ere&ed for colonifts -at the expenceof the
crown. They are fpacious, and refemble thofe o f Weftpha- -
