Gen. C h a k . Frond tu b u la r, constricted at regular intervals, and divided
by internal diaphragms into joints, filled with watery juice, and
traversed by a few longitudinal filaments; periphery composed of
small, polygonal ceUules. Fructification of two kinds, on distinct
individuals ; 1, spherical, ovate, or conical capsules {ceramidia) containing
a tu ft of wedge-shaped seeds, on a central placenta. 2, tr ip
artite tetraspores, immersed in the smaUer branches near their apices.

D e so k . Bxoot an expanded, fleshy disc. Prond two to three inches high,
h ah a line to a line in diameter, branching from the base in an irregular
tnnuuer; the lower or main branches cyUndrical. scarcely constricted, slender,
arched, zigzag, forming successive arcs in one direction, and iurmshed at
the concave side of the arc with short holdfasts, tipped with discs, by-
means of which the frond attaches itself to neighbouring objects, m a
creeping manner; the upper or secondary branches springing irom the
arched ones, either two or three from one point or solitary, generally unilateral,
simple, spindle-shaped, monihform, constricted at regular mtervals
into ioints about once and a half as long as broad, the upper joints graduaUy
shorter to the tips. RamuU few. short and mostly secund, patent or recurved,
sometimes but rarely binate. CapsuUs spherieal, with a pellucid
border, containing a very dense mass of angular seeds. Tetraspores abuii-
dantly produced in the tips of the branches and ramuli. CoUmr a dull
purple. Substance membranaceous, adhering to paper.
A small specimen of this interesting plant was communicated
to me by Mrs. Griffiths some years ago, under the impression
that it was a new species; but I delayed to describe it until
