GIGARTINA ACICULARIS, Lamour.
G e n . C h a r . Frond cartilaginous, either filiform, compressed or flat, irregularly
divided ; pnrplisli-red ; the axis or central substance composed
of branching and anastomosing longitudinal filaments ; the periphery
of diohotomous filaments laxly set in pellucid jelly; their apices
monihform, strongly united together. Fructification double, on distinct
plants ; 1. external tubercles containing, on a central placenta,
dense clusters of spores (favellidia) held together by a net-work of
fibres ; 2, tetraspores scattered among the filaments of the periphery.—

resemble.
G ig a e t in a acicularis; frond cylindrical, ffliform, irregularly branched,
between pinnated and diohotomous ; branches divaricating, curved ;
ramuli few, very patent or recurved, subulate, often secund ; tubercles
spherical, scattered on the branches.
