A most variable plant, found in some of its varieties in almost
all seas, and abundant everywhere. I bave but to refer to tbe
accompanying plate, in wbicb I bave represented some of tbe
more striking of tbe British varieties ; and to the elaborate
analyses of Turner, in the ‘Historia Fucorum,’ and of Greville
in bis ‘Algæ Britannicoe ’. My limited space precludes the possi-
bibty of entering more fnUy into its history in this place.
