POLYIDES ROTUNDUS, Grev.
G e n . C h a u . Root an expanded disc. Frond cylindrical, diohotomous, cartilaginous,
solid, the axis consisting of densely packed, longitudinal,
interlacing and anastomosing filaments; the periphery of coloured,
horizontal, dichotomous filaments, whose lower half is composed of
large, eUiptical ceUs; their upper of much smaUer, submoniliform
oeUules. Fructification, of two kinds, on distinct individuals; 1,
oblong, irregularly formed, external warts, composed of dichotomous
filaments, through which are scattered eUiptical favellæ, having a
broad peUucid Umhus. 3, cruciate tetraspores immersed, at intervals,
among the filaments of the periphery. P o l y i d e s {Ag),—from ttoXu,
many, and ¡Sea, form or appearance ; a name iU applied to the present
genus.
