notable of these, the Chinth6 Taung, or Lion Hill; is seven
thqusand feet in height. No effort of art could achieve
a more exquisite tapestry of red heather and rounded
slopes, defined by deep green woods along the watercourses,
than is here presented by it to the eye. Its
beauty is vivified by the constant play of light and

shadow on it, as the clouds travel overhead. Another
conspicuous landmark is the Pingu-Taung, a conical
hill, which holds aloft against the sky a small pagoda.
This hill has long enjoyed the reputation of great riches,
and baskets of earth have been taken from it of which
the half have been rubies. The ruby mines company
has been less fortunate; and it was here in the effort
