As the shadows lengthen, a cool air blows upon
the river, the forest is pierced by long shafts of light,
peacocks sun their plumage on the sands, wildfowl
come out to feed, and monkeys run along the shores.
Still later the crickets cheep, and the shrill call of .the
peacock is supplanted by the raucous barking of deer.

The stars shine out, first one by one, and then in
a great company; musk odours fill the air.
There are no hamlets now in sight, for I have
come into the very heart of the jungle. Its fascination
is immense, but incommunicable. There is the
cry of the peacock ! If you have heard it only in an
English park, how shall you judge of its attraction
