On the 8th, at nine in the morning, w e weigh ed, and
failed toward O n e eh eow ; and, at three in the afternoon,
anchored in twenty fathoms water, n ea rly on the fame fpot
a s in the year 1778. We moored w ith the other anchor in
twenty-fix fathoms water. T h e h ig h bluff, oh the South
end o f the ifland, bore Eaft South Eaft ; the North point o f
the road, North h a lf Eaft ; and a b lu ff h ead to the South o f
it, North Eaft b y North. D u rin g the n ight, w e had a ftrong
g a le from the Eaftward ; and, in the morn in g o f the 9th,
found the {hip had driven a w h o le cable’s len gth, and
b rou ght both anchors almoft ahead. We fhortened in the
beft bower c a b le ; but the wind b low in g too frefh to u n moor,
w e were obliged to remain this and the two fo llow in
g days, w ith the anchors ftill ahead.
On the 12th, the weather be in g moderate, the mafter was
fent to the North Weft fide o f the ifland, to lo ok fo r a more
convenient place for anchoring. He returned in the^even-
in g, h a vin g found, clofe round the Weft point o f the road
where we now lay, w h ich is alfo the Wefternmoft point o f
th e ifland, ,a fine bay, w ith good anchorage, in eighteen fa thoms
water, a c le a r fandy bottom, not a mile from the
beach, on w hich the fu r f beats, but not fo as to hinder
landing. T h e direction o f the points o f the bay were North
b y Eaft, and South b y We ft; and, in that line, the foundin
