from satisfactorily ascertaining their functions; they seemed to want the central coloured
vessel of the lateral papillae, but perhaps might be considered equally with the others to
perform the office of branchiae. Our captive was not of active habits; it moved seldom
and never quickly, and when it floated in the usual inverted position, which it did occasionally,
it made no exertion whatever to assist its progress.
