Stipes repetitim dichotomus, primum pubescens, demum glaber, nitidus, fuscus, ex axillis proliferus, ramis ultimis
(et antepenultimis, Mnc) frondosis.
Frondes geminato-furcatoe, lanceolata:, basi apiceque subattenuata:, 6-unciales ad sesquipedalem longæ, supra
glabræ, subtus ferrugineo-tomentosæ, profonde fere ad basin pinnatifidæ, segmentis linearibus liorizontaîi-
subfalcatis, marginibus omnino integen-imis. Rachis demum glabriuscula. Costa pubescens.
Sort tomento ferrugineo immersi, e capsulis quatuor radiatim dispositis, sphæricis, fere omnino sessilibus, oblique
subverticafiter lato annulatis demum e vertice dehiscentìbus.
Semina oblongo-reniformia, parva.

This seems to agree so well with the M e r te n s ia im m e rsa of Kaulfuss, that wc can have little
doubt of the two plants being the same. It is possible that it may be the M . p u b e s c en s of Humboldt
and Willdenow; though that is said to be clothed beneath with white down. Again, the
M . bifida of the same author has many points in common with this ; but according to the figure in
A e t . H o lm , the branch immediately below the ultimate one is pinnatifid on each side. May not
this be the M . d e cu iren s of Raddi ?
