The Chindwin
Kalewa, “ the mouth of Kale,” stands at the entrance
to the Kale valley. Kalemyo, “ the town of Kale,”
which is approached by way of the Myittha through
scenery of extraordinary beauty, was for long the capital
town of the valley, and its walls and ramparts can still
be traced. The valley is rich and fruitful, but cursed
with malaria; and before the British arms overcame
the Chin highlanders, it lay at their mercy, and was
frequently harassed by raids.
