 Almost  every  individual of  the  three  British  species  
 of  the  genus Colymbus  that  is  killed  at  any  distance  
 from  the  sea,  and recorded  in the local press, is  honoured  
 with  the  name of "  Great  Northern  Diver;"  but  to  
 those of  my  readers  who  have  any  acquaintance  with  
 British  ornithology  it  is  almost  needless  to  state  that  
 the  appearance of  the  present  species  on  inland  waters  
 in  England  is  exceptional,  and  that  the  majority of  the  
 records  to  which I  allude  relate in fact  to  the  Red-throated  
 Diver. Off  our  coasts,  however,  the  Great  
 Northern  Diver  is  by  no  means  uncommon  during  
 autumn,  winter,  and  early  spring.  In  the  very cold  
 snowy  weather of  the  early  part of  April  1876  we  
 found a  great  many of  these  birds  frequenting  the  bay
