IT was the intention of the Author, as stated in the Advertisement
prefixed to Vol. L to add the tints of Werner’s nomenclature of colours
to Vol. II. Upon repeated experiments with the tints, it was
found that the best water colours produced in their combinations,
fading and evanescent tints—and the Author was acquainted with no
other mode of colouring them. He believes the tints of Werner’s
Book to be died by mineral solutions, and afterwards they are evidently
pasted in squares, opposite to the columns of names. Hence it
was impossible for him to add the tints, which he intended to do under
the idea that they were produced by the common colours in use.
