Corolla 4-cleft; segments fimbriate; leaves lanceolate, acute ; stem erect, terete.

Root biennial, smaller than that of the preceding species, but likewise
bitter. Stems very numerous from the same root, about ten or
twelve inches high, round and smooth. Leaves short, lanceolate,
broad at base, acute, sessile, glabrous, same colour on either side.
Flowers terminal, solitary, large, of a rich bluish-purple; the segments
of the corolla being beautifully fringed. Calix segments lanceolate.
Inhabits damp woods and meadows near trees; flowering from September
till November.
