GENERIC CHARACTER.
Calix 5-cleft. Corolla funnel-form or campanulate, 5-plaited. Stigma capitate, globose.
Capsule 2 or 3-celled, many-seeded.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Leaves pennate, pinnatifid, segments linear, flowers bright crimson, capsule ovate,
2-seeded? seeds sub-cylindric-oblong.
T his beautiful and favourite vine is indigenous to the hotter parts
of North America. It attains the height even in cultivation in pots
and common gardens, of ten or fifteen feet, and with care is readily
made to attain a stature many feet higher. Its foliage is late appearing,
and rather slow in its first growth—after midsummer, however, the
vine quickly creeps up the threads and other supports prepared for it,
