Phyllodes alis anticis ellipticis apice falcatis, fuscisj brunueo variis plaga magna versus apicem magis livida, stigmate
medio obliquo sublimato ; posticis fuscis ángulo externo late fulvo ; omnibus subtus fuscis apicibus fulvescentibus.
Phyllodes with the fore wings elliptic, having the tip falcate, brown, varied with brighter brown irrorations, and
having a large livid patch near the apex : the characteristic stigma in the middle of the wing is very oblicpie and
slightly lunate ; hind wings brown, with a broad fulvous patch on the outer angle ; beneath all the wings are brown
with a fulvescent margin. The fore wings have a leaden gloss in the middle. The body is brown, with a leaden
gloss on the head and front of the thorax.
Expansion of the fore wings nearly Si inches.

anah chermesina medio alba, aUs anticis subtus medio albis veuis nigi-is, posticis ut supra coloratis.
Phyllodes with the fere wings elliptical, the tips less falcate than in the preceding species, brown glossed with
plumbeous, irrorated with Inteons and with a large dii-ty fulvous patch, varied with brown, along the apical margin;
the stigma is large and somewhat S-shaped, of an obscui'e fulvous colour, inclosing two black cm-ved lines ; the hind
wmgs are blue black, with a large carmine nearly-eii-cular spot with the middle white ; at the anal angle, the fore
wings beneath are white m the middle with the vehis broadly black ; the hind wings are colom-ed as on the upper side.
Expansion of the fore wings 5-J- inches.

OBSEEVATIONS.—This beautiful insect, described by Fabricius from tlie British Museum Collectiou,
has been confounded by Boisduval with another closely-allied species, from the Indian Islands, figiu-ed
by Cramer, the distinctions of which may be thus stated :—

Erebus with the wings black with a slight metallic gloss, aU witli a narrow imdulatmg whitish line beyond the
middle of the wings and with the apical margin and cilia whitish, tlie fore wings having a large romided ocellus
varied with livid ferruginous, obscm'o green and cyaneous black, and h-rorated with white scales on its inner part ;
on the under side the wings are coloured as above, but the fore ones are entirely destitute of the ocellus.
Expansion of the fore wings 5 inches.
