Lucanus brassy-blaclc, clothed with a fine du-ty buff pubescence, the mandibles very porrected and deflexed beyond
the middle, longer and more slender than in L. Ceryua ; armed near the base within with a small subreflexed obtuse
tooth, and with another near the middle ; the tips strongly furcate ; the elytra are very glossy and dehcately
punctured ; the tibi» dark pitchy red ; the clypeus conical, deflexed, and entii-e ; the front of the head much
reflexed ; its sides much elevated, with the hinder angles of the eleyated part romnded. The male yarie.9 m
liaying the mandibles more or less denticulated between the base and the middle.
Lengtii of the insect, including the mandibles, 28 lines.

L. Lunifer, Hope in Eoyle's Himalaya, but is more elegant in its proportions.

Lucanus of a reddish colom- with a brassy tinge, more or less clothed with pale pubescence ; the elytra and legs
fulvous, the head very large and broadest in front, the eyes scarcely cut by the septum, the mandibles long, ™th
one tootii before and another beyond the middle, the apex with several minute teeth ; the antemite very much
elongated, with a 4-jomted club ; the first joint of the club bemg largest^; the pronotum is narrowed belmid ; the legs
are long, with the fore tibice sometimes ai-med in the middle with a very small spine ; the fom- hind tibi® unarmed.
Length of the specimen figured, including the mandibles, 19 lines.

O B S E R V A T I O N . — T h i s cm-ious species forms a very distinct subsection in the genus Lucanus,
distinguished by its large head and long mandibles, antennte, and feet, its somewhat semi-cü'cular
lower lip, and metallic colouring, &c. It appears to vaiy considerably in the toothing of the mandibles,
a large specimen in the British Museum (var. L. macrognathus, White MS.) having a number
of minute teeth between the base and the first large tooth, and as many as 16 minute subapical
denticulations; its fore tibim are also unarmed, the head and mandibles bronzed, and the sides of
the head strongly punctured. It was collected by Hugh Lowe, jun., Esq., in Borneo.

Lucanus of a darle chestnut colour, moderately glossy, with the head, mandibles, legs, and suture of the elytra

ones with a very small spine in the middle, the posterior ones outwai-dly uuaa-med, but furnished with a small
