Inhabits Manilla. (D. Cnming.) In the Collection of the British Museum
D e s c k i p t i o . - T h e head is very delicately punctured aU over the upper surface; the middle of the
disc of the prothorax ,s ho^^ever nearly smooth; the front of the head is excavated as in some alHcd
an es of he head is a shghtly elevated angular mark ; and near the base of each of the larger spines
of the prothorax is an impressed dot. The eyes are entirely intersected by the flat septum, the four

Bi tish Museum the left fore tibia has a minute spine behind the subapical teeth.
OBSI..VA.IO.S.-THS iiaseet is very closely alhed to L. Alces, but that species has a strong tooth at
the base of the mandibles on the mside. Dr. Bui-meister has, indeed, appended a note to the specimen
of the British Museum CoUection affirming it to be a variety of that species. I am well aware of the
- y variable si.e o the teeth of the mandibles in the Lucani, which l i induccd this opinion ; but a
1 ave the horns and teeth developed to excess. I ean scarcely think that the insect before ns ought to
e referred to a species, the ordmarUy smaller males of which are more strongly armed with teeth
than the specimen here figui-ed.
