The Dotterel is a spring and autumn visitor to many
of the counties of England as it passes to and from its
breeding-grounds in the higher mountains of the Lake-
district and of the Highlands of Scotland. It performs
similar migrations in Europe and Western Asia, breeding
in the north or the high mountains of more southern
countries, such as Transylvania and Styria, and spending
the winter in the countries bordering the southern
shores of the Mediterranean.
Lord Lilford has given a full account of his own
personal knowledge of this interesting bird in his ‘ Birds
of Northamptonshire ’ (vol. ii. p. 4). [0. S.]
