An American straggler to this country, of which two
unquestioned instances of its occurrence are on
record—one near Bawtry on the borders of Lincolnshire,
and one near Marazion in Cornwall. In the latter case
the bird was shot by Mr. Yingoe on September 12,
1871.
Over the greater part of North America the Yellow-
shanked Sandpiper is a well-known bird as a spring and
autumn migrant during its passage to its breeding-
grounds in the subarctic districts of the Continent. On
its return it spreads widely over the West Indian
Islands, Central and South America, and reaches as far
south as Chili and Patagonia. [0. S.]
