 An  American straggler to  this country, of which two  
 unquestioned  instances  of  its  occurrence  are  on  
 record—one near Bawtry on the borders of Lincolnshire,  
 and one near  Marazion in  Cornwall.  In the latter case  
 the  bird  was  shot  by  Mr. Yingoe  on  September  12,  
 1871. 
 Over the  greater part of  North America  the  Yellow-  
 shanked Sandpiper is a well-known bird as a spring and  
 autumn  migrant  during  its  passage  to  its  breeding-  
 grounds in the subarctic districts of the Continent.  On  
 its  return  it  spreads  widely  over  the  West  Indian  
 Islands,  Central and  South  America,  and reaches as far  
 south as Chili and Patagonia.  [0.  S.]
