The food of this species is said to consist of insects,
small mollusca, and, when ripe, the fruit of the crow-
berry (Empetrum, nigrum).
Nuttall states that on their arrival from the north in
Massachusetts Bay and New Jersey they are very fat
and well flavoured, and included with Numenius hud-
sonicus and Limosa fedoa under the general name of
Dough-birds.
